Joan, I highly recommend the Amtrak trip, at least from Portland to Chicago... the Empire Builder passes through Glacier National Park and features a lovely doubledecker train and a cafecar that's nearly all windows. Perfect for watching our lovely country pass by!

Ms. Meister, I can't believe I'm somehow 3 years behind the NYT and 1 month behind you (or, I totally can.) I look forward to hearing your review of your membership in the elite Soda Club! Also, thanks for the well wishes. Have you been out to Portland lately? The food scene seems to be on a scale comparable to New York's, but the city's scale is more like Boston's. Hi ladies,
Thank you for teaching this workshop. You inspired me to plant seeds for the first time -- it was surprisingly easy! I put the dirt in the pot, the seed in the dirt, and the water on the seed, and a few days later... a plant! Who knew? My husband was so impressed by my new gardening skill he built me a raised bed for mother's day. Now the plants are in the dirt, green-side up. I bought the smelly fertilizer you recommended. Wish me luck.

That IS a great book -- Darrah and I have found a lot of inspiration from it for our own botanical-based naturally fermented soft-drinks. I'll be curious to hear of your cream soda. Darrah and I made one and it was..well... not to the level of our root beer to say the least! I look forward to hear your taste-test!
